5 Ways to Make Extra Money From Your Home… Literally
February 15, 2011

If you own a house and need a bit of extra cash there are several options that you could consider to make money. Here are 5 ways to make extra money from your home… literally!

Rent Your Parking Spot – If you live in a dense urban area you can rent out your parking spot. When I lived in Hawaii parking was at such a premium that people could fetch several hundred dollars for their parking stall, especially towards the downtown area. There are several sites which offer parking spot arrangements which include parkingspots.com and parkatmyhouse.com.

Swap Your House – This isn’t necessarily making money from your home, but you can save money on your next vacation by eliminating the costs associated with hotels or staying in a different state or even country. You may have watched the movie the movie, The Holiday, which was a great, yet romantic, version of a housing swap in action. Although it may seem weird to have strangers in your house, by using Skype to communicate, getting references first, and making sure any valuables and important paperwork are locked up, you should be good to go.

Get a Roommate – Ah roommates, they’re not glamorous, but they do provide you with some extra rent money if times get tight (that is, if they pay their bills). I’ve used roommates as a living arrangement the majority of my adult life and find that it’s a great way to significantly lower my living expenses. I even have a few single dad friends who live together so that they can better handle raising their kids because of their schedules. Roommates could also entail living in a communal arrangement, but you might have to move homes in order to accomplish that.

Power up Your House – Use your roof and power grid as a way to shoot power back to the grid. Although solar is still an expensive alternative, it is possible for those who are handy to build their own solar panels and place them on their roof. You can even used damaged solar cells from ebay and save a ton of money. If you’ve got the time you could tinker around and build your own by following some simple instructions on the internet.

Convert Your Backyard to an Edible Paradise – If you’ve got a lawn in your backyard, you’re not using your land for the highest and best use. There’s a family in Pasadena California that uses their yard on a quarter of an acre lot to raise all their own food and also sell some for the extra produce for tens of thousands of dollars each year. Local restaurants in the upscale market are demanding fresh organic produce which this family offers. Sure they may work a bit harder than all of us, but they do it in a beautiful environment that allows them to stay at home. Check out the video below to see how they do it.

If you need some extra cash and have a house with some extra space that isn’t being utilized there are many options for you. Your creativity and willingness to work to save some money will be the factors in which you can make money from your home, literally!

The Blanket With Sleeves
I have to start with the Snuggie. It’s a cheap, polyester blanket with sleeves worn backwards, that also has the effect of making you look like an extra in a B-movie cult film. The best part is that while the Snuggie might be popular, they copied the idea from a small business owner. We might laugh at the commercials (have you seen the Macarena one?) but the company is laughing all the way to the bank with something like 4-5 million sold. That’s at a price of $19.95 plus shipping and handling. Personally, I think they ripped off Yoda. Let’s not leave your pets out, because there’s a Snuggie for dogs too.

Billy Bob Teeth
Halloween is coming and costume stores will be popping up. You might have used Billy Bob Teeth to complete your costume without realizing it. This company makes teeth overlays to make it appear as if you have (usually) bad teeth. I want to slap myself every time I see these things because I know that they probably cost 50 cents to make in China but they sell here start at $9.99 here. Someone is wearing those fake teeth all the way to the cashier window, and it’s not me.

The Pottery That Grows
Ch-ch-ch-chia! You’ve seen the commercials. You spread some seeds on the outside of a figure (President Obama head anyone) or sprinkle them in a small pot, water it, and then it magically grows! Chia seeds are actually edible (maybe not the ones that come with your “pet”) and are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. You can find the seeds or chia flour at your local health food stores. A chia pet is about $17.99 at your local drug store. A pound of high quality organic chia seeds is around $15 retail. You get just a few ounces with your “pet” and they pay wholesale. By the way, those chia seeds will grow on just about any surface. Drop some onto a plate, add water and watch them grow. Man, am I in the wrong business.

Slip ‘n Slide
If you were a kid in the last three decades, then you know this one. It’s the Slip ‘n Slide. For those of you that have no clue what this is, it’s a long, thin piece of plastic to which you attach your garden hose. Somewhere in the plastic are little holes that allows water to escape and the plastic to get wet. You’re expected to take a running start and leap onto this wet plastic and slide your way to heaven. Well, not you, but your kid is. Now, I think of myself as a smart person, so I don’t know why I didn’t think of putting down a tarp, greasing or soaping it up to make it slippery, then setting my garden hose on it for hours of fun, but someone else did, and now they’re rich. I’m not mad.
Oxiclean
I bet that one surprised you, didn’t it? Do you want to know what’s actually in the stuff? It’s made from sodium percarbonate mixed with a bleaching agent called sodium carbonate (washing soda). And here I thought my dual biology and chemistry degrees wouldn’t come in handy. You’re thinking that this must be some magic chemical? Nope. If you own a pool, sodium percarbonate is the stuff that you drop in there to keep the pool clean. You can get bucket loads of it for cheap. When mixed together and dissolved in water, the two chemical form hydrogen peroxide in water. Yes, good ‘ole hydrogen peroxide that you have in your medicine cabinet and sprinkle on cuts. Hydrogen peroxide acts sort of like a bleach because it is a strong oxidizing substance. You can make your own version of this at home with the following recipe:

1 cup water
1/2 cup baking soda (or washing soda for really bad stains)
1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
You can find washing soda at your local hardware store. Arm & Hammer makes some.

So that’s it folks. Those are my top five. Someone is going to disagree with me for some things on my list, but it’s my list! You can also check out some more dumb ideas that made people rich. Can you think of some more dumb things that made someone a heck of a lot of money?

Business Etiquette: 10 Tips on How to Shake Hands With Confidence
How Women Can Communicate They Are Equal in Business
By Lahle Wolfe

A handshake is more than just a greeting. It is also a message about your personality and confidence level. In business, a handshake is an important tool in making the right first impression.

While the art of handshaking does vary within cultures, in the United States the “rules” are pretty universal.

1. Begin With an Oral Introduction of Yourself
Before extending your hand, introduce yourself. Extending your hand should be part of an introduction, not a replacement for using your voice. Extending your hand without a voice greeting may make you appear nervous or overly aggressive.

2. Pump Your Hand Only 2-3 Times
A business handshake should be brief and to the point. Consider a handshake a short “sound bite” greeting, not a lengthy engagement. Holding on for more than three or four seconds can make other people feel uncomfortable.

3. Shake From Your Elbow
If you shake from the shoulder, using your upper arm instead of just your forearm, you risk jolting your handshake partner. The idea is to connect, not be overbearing.

4. Do Not Use a Forceful Grip
A handshake should be a friendly or respectful gesture, not a show of physical strength. An uncomfortable handshake is never a pleasant experience for anyone. Imagine you are opening a door handle and use about the same level of grip in your handshake.

5. Avoid Offering a “Fish Hand”
A limp hand is never a good idea when it comes to a business handshake. Do return the grip, but do not get into a power struggle, even if the other person squeezes too hard.

6. Forget “Lady Fingers”
This is not a Southern Cotillion, this is business. Offering only your fingers to shake may be appropriate in some social settings, but in business settings you are an equal, not a “lady.” Extend your entire hand, and be sure to grasp using your entire hand as well.

7. One Hand is Better than Two
Avoid the urge to handshake with two hands. It is always better in business introductions to use only one hand – your right hand – for the shake. The use of two hands with strangers is seen as intrusive, and too personal. In fact, a two-handed shake is called the “politician’s shake,” because it appears artificially friendly when used on people you barely know.

8. Shaking a Sweaty Hand
If you shake hands with someone who has sweaty palms, do not immediately wipe your hands on your clothing, handkerchief, or tissue. This will further embarrass the other person, who is probably already aware they have sweaty hands. You can discretely wipe them on something after you are out of site, and wash them later.

9. Ending a Handshake
End the handshake after 3-4 seconds, or 2-3 pumps. In order to avoid creating an awkward moment, your shake should end before the oral introduction exchange does. Without conversation taking place during the entire handshake, it becomes too intimate, and can feel more like hand holding.

10. Covering Your Mistakes
Even if you make a mistake, do not panic. There are many ways to save the moment. If you are worried that your handshake did not convey the right message about yourself, simply change the focus of the moment by offering a quick compliment or asking the other person a question.

by Hege Crowton – Date: 2005-12-08 – Word Count: 688

Did you know that spending long hours at your computer can put your health at serious risk? Most people does not even consider that possibility, but t does, Working at a desk is extremely hard on your body, and I would like to share this with you so maybe you can avoid some of the most common health risks. One of the most common one is: NECK PAIN

Tips for NECK PAIN relief

Neck pain can really get irritating if it persists for long periods of time. The pain can get unbearable that’s why some people succumb to taking medications or pain relievers only to find out that they don’t do them any good. Let’s check out these simple and basic tips on how to treat and relieve you from neck pain.

1. Get spinal checkups regularly. It is very important to always keep your spine aligned. This can ensure the proper functioning of your neck and back, specifically the upper region. Your chiropractor will do spinal adjustments on you. This can decrease the stress on your thoracic and cervical spines. It also improves the communication between your brain and all parts of the body. As a result, a happier and healthier you.

2. Always be conscious of your posture. There are a lot of people who exhibit poor posture. When asked to stand up straight, they are unable to exude the proper posture anymore. This is because they have been used to that kind of posture and they are unaware of it already. Proper posture does not only involve the back, as lot may think. It also includes the neck. Poor posture, if not dealt with can give rise to neck pain as well.

3. Exercise regularly. Exercising does not only do good to the body’s muscular and cardiovascular system but to the skeletal system, too. For an efficient and effective program, you have to do at least three sessions a week for about forty minutes. In order to be more inspired to do these exercises, involve the whole family and your friends. It will benefit, not only yourself, but your loved ones as well.

4. Eat well and eat right. Naturally, you keep your body healthy by eating the right food at the right amount. When you observe proper diet and nutrition, your body will the given the appropriate energy or fuel that can increase your endurance and performance. It can also increase your body’s immune system to fight injuries and sickness. It can speep your recovery from injury and it also makes you feel good. If you are having a hard time eating right, you might as well consider taking up dietary supplements to cover up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies in your body.

5. Manage stress. There are a lot of techniques devised to relieve stress, if not to eliminate it totally. Usually, stress is carried on the upper back, the shoulders, and the neck. If you prefer, go to your nearest chiropractor to ask about these techniques and how to do them the right way.

6. Do not put pressure on your neck. For example, while using the telephone, do not use your neck and shoulders to hold it while you talk. In the office, always sit properly and keep your neck straight by working at eye level. You can unconsciously get neck pain during sleep because you are unaware of your movements. You can use a cervical pillow for this. You can also roll a towel and put it around the curve of your neck while you sleep. Never sleep on your stomach.

7. Stretch. It is always best to do stretching if possible. In the office or at home, you can take short breaks just to reduce the tension. Some massage won’t hurt either. It can decrease the tension not only on your shoulders but also on your neck.

Do not let yourself get weighed down by neck pain. If you are one of those people suffering from neck pain, do not fret. There are a lot of simple techniques and remedies you can get and use wherever you may be.

There are other risks as you sit in front of that computer but it would be to much to write about in this article, so if you would like to learn more about other risks such as:

Various studies have found that people with chronic pain actually smoke tobacco at a higher rate. Yet it is known that smoking negatively impacts pain management. Many that experience chronic back pain or neck pain are much more likely to be longtime tobacco smokers. All electronic cigarette brands deliver nicotine without tobacco. The user effectively quit tobacco with e cigarettes.

Voltaic Solar Bags
Not only does the Solar Bag appease the eco-friendly businessman, but it’s also ideal for those apocalypse-era travelers who want to charge on the go. Available in backpack, messenger, and laptop sizes, the Voltaic is the first portable solar bag powerful enough to charge a laptop, and includes batteries to store the extra energy when the sun sets. The solar panels are affixed to the back — towards the sun if being worn — and generate up to four volts an hour. That means it needs about three hours of charge time to power an iPod (so you can listen to REM’s “It’s End of the World As We Know It,” of course). An added plus: Solar panels come in customizable colors. [$199 for messenger bag, $249 for backpack, $499 for generator/laptop bag at Voltaic]
