So you think that money is the root of all evil? Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can’t exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal wlth one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil? -AYN RAND, Atlas Shrugged

The lack of money is the root of all evil.-MARK TWAIN, Mark Twain’s Notebook

Las Vegas is the only place I know where money really talks–it says, “Goodbye.” -FRANK SINATRA, The Joker Is Wild

We teach children to save their money. As an attempt to counteract thoughtless and selfish expenditure, that has value. But it is not positive; it does not lead the child into the safe and useful avenues of self-expression or self-expenditure. To teach a child to invest and use is better than to teach him to save.-HENRY FORD, My Life and Work

A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.-YOGI BERRA

Few men have virtue enough to withstand the highest bidder.-GEORGE WASHINGTON

Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. And it will leave you unfulfilled.-BARACK OBAMA, speech, Jul. 12, 2006

Wealth makes an ugly person beautiful to look on and an incoherent speech eloquent; and wealth alone can enjoy pleasure even in sickness and can conceal its miseries.-SOPHOCLES, The Sons of Aleus [fragment]

No matter how successful a relationship may be, both sexually and emotionally, the lack of money can hamper and undermine, little by little, even the greatest passion.-LAURA ESQUIVEL, Swift as Desire

Home life ceases to be free and beautiful as soon as it is founded on borrowing and debt.-HENRIK IBSEN, A Doll’s House

I do not like money, money is the reason we fight.-KARL MARX

Money is a needful and precious thing, and when well used, a noble thing, but I never want you to think it is the first or only prize to strive for. I’d rather see you poor men’s wives, if you were happy, beloved, contented, than queens on thrones, without self-respect and peace.-LOUISA MAY ALCOTT, Little Women

When I had money, money, O!
I knew no joy till I went poor;
For many a false man as a friend
Came knocking all day at my door. -WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES, Money

Riches are a good handmaid, but the worst mistress.-FRANCIS BACON, De Augmentis Scientiarum

The holy passion of friendship is so sweet and steady and loyal and enduring in nature that it will last through a whole lifetime, if not asked to lend money.-MARK TWAIN, The Tragedy of Pudd’nhead Wilson

Money is worth what it will help you to produce or buy and no more.-HENRY FORD, My Life and Work

A big part of not having money as a kid isn’t that you haven’t the stuff you want. It isn’t being without heat, or the phone and electric company sending cut-off notices. It’s lying in bed late at night worrying. You feel ashamed that your family is so radically different. Other families had stable lives and nice homes they could invite their friends to visit. Those things didn’t happen in our family. So it was a little bit like embarrassment on top of embarrassment. But the worst is that, even more than food and shelter, you worried about your parents’ anxiety, which was palpable in the house. It sounds crazy, but I’m grateful for all that now. It gave me a really good work ethic and sympathy for the majority of people who aren’t rich. I feel in touch with their lives.-SARAH JESSICA PARKER, Sam Magazine, 2005

Money … is like a beautiful thoroughbred horse–very powerful & always in action, but unless this horse is trained when very young, it will be an out-of-control & dangerous animal when it grows to maturity.-DAVE RAMSEY, Financial Peace Revisited

Powerful to alleviate, to delay, to camouflage, though money is, in the end it lets us down.-CARYLL HOUSELANDER, The Reed of God

Money doesn’t spend in hell…. The devil deals in a different coin.-LAURELL K. HAMILTON, Blue Moon

Riches are for spending.-FRANCIS BACON, Essays

Love and money should properly have nothing to do with each other.-JOHN SAUL, Guardian

I’ll acquaint you with the first ironclad rule of the enormously wealthy: Never spend one’s own money.-MARK FROST, The List of Seven

Money … those who don’t have enough of it are only aware of what it can buy them. When you finally have enough of it you become aware–acutely aware–of all the things it can’t buy … the really important things … like youth, health, love, peace of mind.-F. PAUL WILSON, The Tomb

When money talks, nobody cares what kind of grammar it uses.-ROBERT ELLIOTT GONZALES, Poems and Paragraphs
